Lydia Women's Empowerment Ministries Lydia Women's Empowerment Ministries is a partner ministry to Kwanzaa Community Church.
From the inception of Kwanzaa Community Church, ten years ago, the women have stepped forward to voice their needs, knowing that as they become stronger, so will their families become stronger. In the early years, the women asked for Recovery Circles, women’s groups that made possible the recovery of humanity from the effects of bruising racism, sexism and classism in America. From that, the women of Kwanzaa and of the greater community (such as parents of Freedom School children) realized a need for greater spiritual grounding and asked for teachings on women of the Bible. Many times, the women, many of whom are single parents holding down multiple jobs, have realized their own tiredness and isolation and asked for fun events for fellowship – we have been to plays, movies and other morale boosting outings. Two years ago, all of the women’s needs and ideas were synthesized into Lydia Women’s Empowerment Ministries – which seeks spiritual, family, social change and economic empowerment for all women of the Northside. The Lydia Project (as it is affectionately known) is led by Rev. Paula Sanders, the first Minister of Word and Sacrament to be ordained at Kwanzaa Community Church.
